Cycling Exposed!

July 24, 2008

So!! Who wants to get naked and ride around the city on a bicycle? Tons of people all over the world, that’s who.

In their birthday suits, perched atop a bike seat, these groovy naked souls pedal in the World Naked Bike Ride to raise awareness about our debilitating dependency on oil, global warming, and the benefits of cycling.

In addition, it serves as a platform to broach societies issues with nudity and it attempts to aid people in becoming more “self-aware”. But listen, with your junk and bits hangin’ out there for all to see, it would be hard not feel an acute sense of self-awareness.

I’m a fan of cycling (duh) and I enjoy most activities that advocate cycling for many reasons—In fact I support these happy naked souls. But I’ll cheer from the sidelines on this one. It’s safe to say my bike and I will never get that close.

Map out your next ride

Somehow the universe is listening. It knows how I fight the good fight to get more peeps to cycle. On many occasions my “cycling is grand” conversations head towards the topic of commuting to work by bicycle. I hear the “Well, I would bike to work but it’s so unsafe…I don’t know where the bike friendly streets are”. Know I can scream RUBBISH!, and then enjoy an awkward laugh.

I’ve noticed in the last 4 months alone 2 sites getting tons of use and becoming more popular. They’re fulfilling a need for so many cyclist in the city with awesome biking info like finding the safest route from point A to point B; or simply checking out all the wonderful bike friendly and even bike only routes, routes that are separated from traffic.

NYC Bike Maps has interactive bicycle maps for each borough giving you many options to plan a ride for commuting or recreation. It also has tons of useful information about biking in NYC and acts as a hub for cycling events around the city.

Ride the City is another interactive map focusing on cycling routes in the Big Apple and makes it easier to map a safe route to ride. Just plug in point A and B, wait a half-second and it’s laid out for you on screen giving the most direct, a safe and the safest route to your destination.

Both sites are very useful and will aid me in my never ending quest to get more people to bike more, whenever and where ever they can.

Gettin’ Started

June 20, 2008

So, yea. This is my very first, very own blog and although I’ve created this blog to share my bike lust, I notice my geekism oozing out on my very first post.

I’ve been poking around in the admin section of my blog and checking out all the bells and whistles and I’m getting my geek fix on. WP actually isn’t that bad. I had some reservations initially during my 1st few rounds of research in choosing a blog service. After digging deep into the features I’ve uncovered ways around certain obstacles that would have otherwise hindered my creativity, visually speaking.

Aaaaaaaaanyway, Crankset will be a place where I’ll share all groovy things related to of cycling.

Peace.
